Glow through a transparent object.
( Video Post Compositing )

By Dennis Clevenger, 2005

3DS Max will not allow you to render the glow effect through a transparent object.  This technique may not work in every case, but fortunately it did for this project.  The image below shows a reflow oven with the hood having a transparent material applied to reveal the inside.  Running the length of the oven on each side of the conveyor is a cable which was requested to be glowing for visibility purposes by the client.
Add Scene Event Add Image Input Event Add Image Filter Event Add Image Layer Event Add Image Output Event

Fortunately, Max provides a separate rendering area called Video Post, where you can add numerous special effects and image processing.  See in the image above that we've added a Scene Event, which will render whatever is in Camera01's view.  Next an Image Filter Event was added to make the probes glow.  Finally an Image Output Event was added to save the rendered images with the "post-processed" Glow added to geometry.
Above you can see the probes now glowing in this render without the oven hood.
Notice above that we've added an Image Input Event.  Make sure nothing is selected in the Queue column on the left.  You will select your pre-rendered image that is to be composited.  Make sure this is in a format that will have an alpha channel with it, ie. Targa, TIFF, etc.  Now drag this new Image Input Event up and drop it between the Camera01 label and the Glow Filter Event.
Now select (Ctrl+LMB) both the Scene Event (Camera01) and the object you want to composite (hood).  With both of these highlighted, you will notice a new icon active on the Video Post toolbar.  It's called Add Image Layer Event.  Click it and in the resulting window, select Alpha Compositor from the drop down menu, then select OK.  Notice that the Scene Event and the composited overlay are now nested beneath the Layer Event.

Click the running man (Execute Sequence) icon on the toolbar to setup your render.

Above is a frame from the rendered animation showing the glow occurring behind the transparent hood over the oven.
